Canva is a hot new design software loved by business owners and non-designers alike. Canva makes creating new designs easier and saves so much time. They offer trendy pre-made templates and you can turn out pretty nice designs. We have even used Canva in our business and for our clients like when we create social media graphic templates.
Then, a client asked if they could create a logo using Canva. Our advice: DON’T DO IT! Canva is not the place to design something so important.
Creating a logo in Canva may seem like an easy way to avoid paying for a professional designer, but there are consequences for doing so.
3 Reasons Not to Design Your Logo In Canva
-
1. Your logo will not be unique
A well-designed logo is supposed to make your company stand out as unique. Canva’s template based designs (used by thousands of other users) won’t do that for you — your logo will look like everyone else’s. Which defeats the whole point of a logo. To make it worse, most of the templates use the same tired minimalistic and flat styles paired with basic fonts.

2. No vector files
Canva is not professional design software, so anything you produce cannot be exported in a vector format. Not having a vector file will become problematic if you ever want to modify the design or scale your logo to print on larger items. Without a vector file, enlarging your logo will eventually cause it to become blurry or pixelated. They also offer limited file types and sizes, which greatly reduces how and where you can use your logo design.

3. You Can’t Trademark Your Logo
You don’t own the legal rights to your final logo design. In fact, Canva owns it. This means you can’t get your logo design trademarked, regardless of how much you customize the template. Simply put, your logo is not your own and can never be yours. This is the biggest reason to avoid using Canva for your logo design.
In the end…
It may be tempting to use a free design tool like Canva to create a logo yourself, but be aware of the pitfalls and legal issues you may face down the road. Canva’s templates are generic and will most likely lead to an amateur design. Unless you have some creative chops, designing a logo yourself may result in a sub-par design that won’t be winning over your customers anytime soon. Investing in a professional logo designer will end up saving you time and money later. Your business deserves better than a basic Canva template-based logo!
